Crystal Lake, Illinois Information
Crystal Lake is a city located in southeastern McHenry County in the northeastern part of the US state of Illinois. It is named after Crystal Lake, a lake located 1.6 miles (2.6 km) west-southwest of downtown Crystal Lake. Crystal Lake is about 45 miles northwest of Chicago. The population was 38,000 at the 2000 census, but as of 2010 the population is at 40,743. Crystal Lake is the largest city in McHenry County, part of the Chicago metropolitan area.
The City of Crystal Lake offers a variety of Parks and recreation areas to relax and play. The 140 acre Veteran Acres Park offers a Nature Center, Rotary Building and Rotary Warming House. The park also has outdoor athletic fields and recreational areas including restrooms, picnic shelters, a playground, two lighted tennis courts, a basketball court, a horseshoe pit, a softball field, and a baseball field. In winter, residents also take advantage of two sled hills and an ice skating pond located at the park.
According to the 2010 census, the city has a total area of 18.96 square miles (49.1 km2), of which 18.35 square miles (47.5 km2) (or 96.78%) is land and 0.61 square miles (1.6 km2) (or 3.22%) is water.
Crystal Lake has distinct neighborhoods. As the largest city in McHenry County, it contains three high schools, and has many separate neighborhoods. Because many adults work out of town, notably in Chicago, social life in Crystal Lake is determined largely by whom people’s children go to school with, and who lives nearby.
According to the 2000 Census there were 38,000 people, 13,000 households, and 9,900 families living in Crystal Lake. The population density was 900/km² (2,300/sq mi). There were 13,500 housing units at an average density of 830/sq mi (320/km²).
